Here is the basic chemical reaction. Just as with two component urethanes, we start and isocyanate resin, but instead of reacting this resin with a typical acrylic or polyester, it reacts with itself. Catalyst by a few molecules of water, it reacts to form carbamic acid. This rapidly decomposes to an amine which reacts with another urethane molecule. This reaction, once started, continues rapidly without regard to temperature to form a more chemically resistant and durable coating then derived from two component urethanes. These reacted polyurethanes are extremely different from to component urethanes.

A Moisture Cure Urethane is a “reactive” coating. A reactive coating is one that requires a catalyst , something in which to begin the chemical reaction of the coating which causes it to begin curing. A moisture cure urethane begins curing with exposure to moisture or humidity and unlike two component reactive urethanes (Part A & B that is mixed together), a moisture cure urethane is not affected as much by temperature as it is humidity. This is the opposite of two component reactive urethanes. Moisture Cure Polyurethanes work differently than water based polyurethanes in that they work in means of a chemical and mechanical bond rather than a just a mechanical bond. They chemically “attach” themselves to the substrate as well as “grabbing” on to the substrate. Water based urethanes only “grab” on to the substrate. The same principal is why moisture cure urethanes are the strongest on the market and also make great adhesives. The 202-16 Marine Polymer Coating is an extremely tough, flexible, and hard wearing clear, high gloss finish. The chemical resistance of the 202-16 makes it suitable for domestic and commercial floors, timber, furniture, sports arenas, public halls, bar tops, and other areas subject to spillage. It can be used on rigid materials such as concrete, wood, or metals or on flexible materials such as rubber, plastic and leather. The coating provides outstanding air dry, corrosion resistant sealing capability on porous and non-porous surfaces like powder metal parts and other metal surfaces. The 202-16 resists inorganic and organic acids, alkalis, solvents, salts, oils, gasoline, and food products. The polymers of the 202-16 have exceptional salt spray resistance, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, temperature resistance and electrical properties.
Millions of dollars are spent each year on the maintenance of painted steel bridges and the repair of old bridge coatings in this nation. To reduce such costs, the use of climate-tolerant, durable coatings has become essential to ensure extended painting seasons and coating lives. In the last decade, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has been actively involved in the study of such coatings and has identified several durable products that are now being used widely in the country. These coatings comply with the regulations established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which continues to lower the allowable amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted from industrial and maintenance coatings. The 202-16 has superior UV stability. The harsh rays of the sun are no match for these aliphatic polymers. Color fade, yellowing, and degradation of the substrate are no longer an issue when using the 202-16 Marine Polymer Coating. Substrates that are exposed to ultraviolet light experience a decreased PH value that leads to corrosion and a short life. Protect your investments from the sun with the best moisture cured marine coating available today. |
